What I'm Loving Wednesday

I'm linking up with Jamie today for What I'm Loving Wednesday!
 I'm loving summer!
Our evening swims are the best, especially since this week it's been over 100 degrees everyday.

I'm loving that I completed my first 10K on Saturday!  My goal was to of course not walk and to keep my pace at close to 10 min per mile.  I surpassed my goal with a 9:22 pace and finished at 58 minutes.  I loved the support I received from my fellow Callipygians.  Yolanda was at the race and did amazing.  She won third overall female and pr'd a full minute and 16 seconds over her last year's time.  The other girls were sending me texts and sweet messages.
Oh, and I'm loving that tonight all 5 of the Callipygians are running a 5K together.  We are completing our 'Race for the Clock' as a group.  After our run we decided a girl's night out sounded fun.  I'm counting down the hours ladies!
I'm loving this sleeping Kallahan picture.  I went into his room to grab something this morning and was shocked that he didn't wake up.  Tyler and I admired our sleeping baby for a moment before he awoke. #purebliss

I'm loving that Keeler is enjoying blastball class.  What is blastball?  I've mentioned that it's what our recreation center offers the 3 & 4 year-olds as a prelude to t-ball.  Its basically t-ball but with one base (that honks).  Last night I took video of Keeler batting to show Tyler since he was unable to attend.  Keeler is doing awesome at batting.  A great part of this little video is Kallahan.  The little cutie started "beeping" when the kids would go to run on the base.  And we say he doesn't talk!
The blastball team is so cute.  When they dismiss the class the coach gathers the kids for a huddle and tells them "okay, say team on three. 1, 2, 3." Then the kids all say, "Team on 3!"

I'm loving that this weekend we get to meet our newest nephew Brody!!  My sister-in-law is scheduled to be induced on Thursday.  Isn't she the cutest!   We're praying for a safe delivery, healthy momma and baby.  We are all so excited!!
What are you loving today?

High Five for Friday!

1// The little cowboys are going to be ringbearers in Tyler's cousins wedding in two weeks.
High Five for waaaaay too much cuteness.
2// High Five for MUCH needed moisture this week and beautiful morning runs.
#prayforrain
3// High Five for a girly design for a friend's daughter birthday.
A nice change from my usual designs of tractors and cowboys.
4// A rainy day made for a fun 'relaxing' evening with my favorite little guys.  We got in our pajamas early and watched Spiderman,  High Five for cuddling on the couch.
5// High Five for the first week of summer.  Keeler's been busy with Bible Camp, Blastball, Playdoh class and afternoon storytime.  Mommy & granny have been busy dropping him here and there.

{For my memory}
Keeler has said some funny things this week.
:: I went downstairs to get on the computer for a quick second.  Keeler walks into the office and says, "What's my pretty lady doing?"
:: Giving the boys their bath.  Kal is already in.  Keeler walks over to the tub and boldly says, "Fat guy coming in!" - #justlikedaddy :)

Tonight Keeler has a Bible Camp program and then tomorrow is my 10K race.  I can't help but be worried about the race.  My calf has been so tight all week and my last run of only 2.5 miles was hard to push through.  I hope my restful week and stretching will get me through.

A day in the life

Hi 'The Domestic Wannabe' readers! My name is Kelley and my blog is called 3 Cowboys and a Mommy.  I work full-time as the marketing director for a large John Deere dealership, my husband (Tyler) is a real life cowboy and runs his own farming/cattle business in southwest Kansas and we have been blessed with 2 little cowboys (Keeler age 4 & Kallahan 20 months).

This is how a typical day in our life looks likes - just 3 cowboys and a mommy.

5:30a:: My alarm goes off and I work at convincing myself to get out of bed to go work out.  I stayed up too late last night watching a few shows off the DVR - I'm obsessed with The Client List right now.  I managed to get up knowing I have a 10K race on Saturday to train for.  This is my last tempo run before the big day.  I lace up my shoes and head out the door for a quick 2.5 mile jog around the neighborhood   It's getting so hot here mornings are the only tolerable time of day to run.  It's a beautiful morning and made for a perfect run.
6:10a:: When I get home I go to the basement for a quick free weight and ab session.  After a good stretch I get in the in the shower.  By the time I get out and start putting on my makeup Keeler walks into my bathroom and asks for his breakfast.  He wakes up between 6:00am and 6:30 every day.  This boy is our early riser!  After a quick hug, I obliged and walk with him to the living room.  I turn on Disney Jr, make him a cup of chocolate milk, put a banana and a Special K Bar in a bowl and he is good to go on the couch while I finish getting ready.  Yes, parents of the year here - he eats on the couch in front of the TV.

7:20a:: I'm now dressed and ready for work. I make a cup of hot green tea, throw myself a banana and a bag of Kashi Autumn Wheat cereal into my work bag.  When I get a box of cereal I go ahead and prebag a serving into little baggies so I can grab them on the way out the door. I run back to our bedroom and kiss Tyler goodbye.  By now he is getting around and heading to the shower.  I then run back up to the front of the house and kiss Keeler goodbye.  I give him a run down of his daily schedule so he knows what to look forward to - Bible School, lunch (yes, I'll be able to eat with you) story-time and then blastball after I pick you up.  Baby Kallahan is still snoozing.  Tyler typically wakes him as soon as he is about to leave to take the little cowboys to the sitters (Granny).  On weekends he'll sleep until around 9am.  #amazing!

7:32a:: By now I'm running late to work as usual so I dart out the door.
7:40a:: I arrive at work.  I go through emails and catch up on facebook while I drink my green tea and eat breakfast.  I justify this because facebook is part of my job - since I'm marketing I manage our companies' business page. ;)  Fellow coworkers pop in and out of my office and visit about this and that.

8:40a:: I meet the other location managers in the conference room for our weekly meeting

10:30a::  After our meeting I return to my office.  I have some missed calls to return and some equipment changes to make.

11:45a:: I leave work to pick up Keeler from Bible school (VBS).  He is having such a good time.  Today they send him home with a CD of the theme songs so we listen to it on the way back to Granny's.  My heart smiles when I hear him singing about his love for Jesus!
We pick up Granny and Kallahan and get a quick bite to eat at Subway.  I seriously could be the next Jared ya'll, we eat Subway for lunch more times than not.  We live in a small town and our options are slim so Subway is the only quick healthy option.

1:00p:: I drop the little cowboys and Granny off at her house and return back at work.  The little cowboys typically take a nap right after lunch.

....until 5:30p::  I complete various tasks at work.  The afternoon typically goes pretty slow but today I had a few extra projects since we have a merger in the horizon.  I was working on getting updated price quotes on promotional materials.  At 3pm I eat a cup of strawberries as my afternoon snack.  I am a definite creature of habit and have to eat at 3pm everyday.  Since I'm tracking calories with myfitnesspal I stay away from the vending machines and just pack some fruit to tie me over.

5:37p::  I pick up the little cowboys!  This is always the best part of my day.  I love opening the door and hearing both boys running up to me saying "mama mama!"  Kal is 20 months old and has just started talking.  I think since he's been such a late talker I appreciate it so much more.

6:00p::  We arrive home.  I know I need to get the little cowboys and myself fed pretty quickly since Keeler has blastball tonight.  This is our first week at taking this little class and he is really enjoying it.  Blastball is what our recreation center offers for 4-year-olds before t-ball.  I heat up the boys left overs and I make myself a big salad.  I love that it's summer and Tyler is grilling on the weekends so I can throw a grilled chicken or steak salad together in minutes.  I hate to cook and hate the mess so our meals are always pretty simple.
At dinner I ask Keeler about his day.  He reports that he didn't enjoy story-time very well.  I tell him maybe it was just the story and let's see how the next session goes.  I signed him up for various rec activities throughout the summer to keep him occupied while preschool is out.  As always, Kallahan manages to scream throughout the meal and I repeatedly tell the boys to eat so we can head to blastball.  Why is mealtime always such a struggle?

6:45p::  After dinner the little cowboys 'help' me clear the table and get the dishes to the dishwasher.  We change Keeler into his tennis shoes and go on a ball glove hunt.  We find it in the garage.  Then we load up and head to the gym.

7:00p::  Blastball starts.  Kallahan and I sit in the stands and watch Keeler play.  Kallahan and a few of the younger siblings play down around the front of the bleachers.  I start thinking about all the hours I have ahead in my future of sitting in stands watching my little cowboys play sports.  I'm not a big sports fan by any means but I could watch my children all day.
I'm so proud to by their mommy,
7:45p::  Blastball is over.  Keeler did very well and hit the ball each time when he went up to bat!  I wish Tyler could have been here to see him but summer on the farm means long work days.  Keeler was getting tired and ran back over to me a couple times and asked if we could leave.  Once they're dismissed we load up and head back home.  Both the little cowboys are exhausted so it's a pretty quiet ride home.

7:55p::  As soon as we get home I give the boys their baths.  I add their clothes to a load of laundry and get it started.  The washer and dryer is in the kid's bathroom so it's made laundry a lot easier since it's right there.
Tyler gets home as I'm getting the boys out of the tub.  He takes Keeler and I take Kallahan and we get them in their pajamas.  Well he gets Keeler into his underwear.  All the sudden Keeler doesn't want to wear pajamas and just sleeps in underwear 'like his daddy.'  We take the boys into Kallahan's room for a book and prayers.  After kisses we lay Kallahan down into his crib and then go tuck Keeler into his bed.  It's been a long day and both little cowboys fall right to sleep.

8:25p:: Tyler and I go into the kitchen and he heats up a leftover steak.  He eats dinner and I decide I need a coconut fruit bar since I have 200 calories left to meet my 1200 goal.  He gives me a recap of the day.  It's pretty much always about what has broke down and how we need some rain. #farmlife

8:55p:: I take my bath after I throw the load of laundry in the dryer.

9:30 - 10:30p::  Tyler and I go the living room and watch a recorded Law & Order: SVU.  A lot of nights we watch separate shows but a couple nights a week we can agree on a few.  Midway through my dryer chime goes off and I fold my nightly load of laundry.

10:35p::  This girl is beat.  After a quick pick up around the house we're off to bed.

And then we'll do this whole thing over tomorrow!

-What is the most surprising thing to you about being a mom?
The most surprising thing is how much you love your children.  It was this immediate love for them.  I love everything about them from their button noses, their smiles to even their imperfections like how my youngest is pigeon toed and my oldest stutters when he gets really excited.  I love everything that makes them unique and wonderful.  I was worried when I was pregnant with my second that I wouldn't love him as much since the love is so extreme but somehow your heart grows.
-What advice would you give to new or soon-to-be mamas?

I would say don't sweat the small stuff.  It okay if your baby is still taking a bottle past the recommended one year point.  It's okay if they have dried boogers on their face at the grocery store,  And most importantly when you are overwhelmed don't be afraid to ask for help.  It's easy to feel like you are failing if you don't have the energy or desire to do everything on your own, especially with a newborn.  So if you need a break, ask!  Ask your friend to come sit with the baby while you run to the store or ask your husband to feed a hungry baby while you go take a long shower.  Mommyhood is hard work!
-What are your top three baby products?

Medela Pump in Style - I used this bad boy multiple times a day with both little cowboys for a year straight each time.   I never had one issue.  I ended up having to pump exclusively with both boys due to healthy problems at their arrivals.  However, pumping worked perfectly for us since I had to return to work.  My pump has now been passed down to my expecting sister-in-law (just to show you the longevity of it's power).

Dwell Studio Blankets - I love little sweater blankets!  These actual blankets were used daily with both my boys and Kallahan still sleeps with one.  They were great for swaddling and great now as a light weight blanket at nap-time and bedtime.

Bella Tunno Laminated Bib - These bibs are great for messy little eaters.  Once baby / toddler is done eating they just wipe right off.  They also come in multiple precious patterns.  I've had two that have lasted through both boys and still look brand new.  They are a bit pricey but well worth it!

Hope you enjoyed reading and I hope to see you at  3 Cowboys and a Mommy.

Weekend Whoas and 10K Training

Our weekend was very quiet and uneventful.  The weather was icky which made us retreat inside more than we'd like.  Just think 30mph gusts and dirt blowing.
Here's just a few weekend whoas {for my memory}.
:: We got up early on Saturday to partake in citywide garage sales.  We didn't buy anything too impressive besides a few children's books, a mirror and Keeler found a toy trailer.  It was a fun morning and Cristen came along.
:: Tyler's silage was cut this weekend.  We went out to the farm with him to check on the crew.  For terrible windy weather, I couldn't get over how beautiful the sky looked.
:: Keeler managed to 'trim' his own hair on Friday evening.  This meant an overall haircut in attempt to fade in his nice gouge.  I was going to buzz it all off until Tyler said, "isn't that wedding soon?"  Nice timing little ring-bearer to be.  I did the best I could to fix it.  Let's hope it grows out in 3 short weeks.

Linking up with Ashley for Move it Monday - just a day late.
I've been working hard to 'keep moving' and have manged to continue to maintain my calorie goals.  On the 10K training front, I'm only a week away from the race!  I've done well following this training plan so I hope to survive the race.  As cross-training this week I did Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred: Level 2.  I love this workout and was impressed with how well it works the obliques.  On Sunday I ran my last 'long distance' run and did pretty well.  It was terribly windy (26 mph) and I managed to maintain a 10:15 pace.  My race is THIS Saturday at 7:15a so I'm hoping for nice weather.  Wish me luck!
At the beginning of May I set myself monthly wellness goals:
1. 1200 cals daily --- accomplished
2. Continue 10k Training Plan --- accomplished
3. Cross train 1 x week --- accomplished
4. No Candy / No Soda --- FAILED.
Guilty of snacking on a few chocolate chips during my nighttime TV watching.
5. {BIG ONE} No eating after dinner!! --- FAILED ^ see above
****************************
Since it's a new month and I'll try anything to keep myself accountable,
here's my June Goals:
1. 1200 cals daily
2. Run 15 miles a week
3. Run 2 10K Races
4. Cross train 1 x week
5. No Candy / No Soda
6. {BIG ONE} No eating after dinner!!
Join me, I'm keeping track with dailymile and myfitnesspal.

Why did I start running?

This post is part of the 'Get to Know Us' series on The Callipygians blog.

Why did I start running?  For you to fully understand and appreciate how far I've come I think it will be best to paint you a picture.  Growing up I was this petite prissy girl.  I always had the perfect outfit, my big Texas hair was my main concern and I had zero interest in sports.  I thought sports were sweaty and unattractive so why would anyone want to do that to themselves?!  I actually “managed” the school sports teams to receive credit for physical activity throughout junior high.  The extent of my physical activity involved playing putt-putt on dates and running walking the 800 a few times during track season.  Seriously, two of my girlfriends and I walked the 800 meter race at a few junior high track meets.  I look back and think how embarrassing y’all?!  I was the furthest thing away from an athlete.  I did however excel in socializing and shopping.
I went to college and continued on with my prissy little life.  I went to class full-time and worked at a jewelry store.  I had a wonderful boyfriend, Tyler (my now husband), who also went to Texas Tech (guns up!) and worked full-time.  His job was high intensity physical labor at a tire service center.  In the evenings when we both got off work naturally we would go out to eat, as college kids do, at fast food restaurants.  Since he was working so hard and was a young 20-something man he had a HUGE appetite.  I started eating faster to keep up with him and my dainty portions were growing a little more each day.  It didn't take me long to realize that I had packed on that dreaded college weight.  Thankfully mine took a little longer than some to put on.  It wasn't the “freshman 15” it more like the “junior 15” but to me on my petite frame the extra weight was horrific and this prissy girl was freaking out.
Getting a little chunky!
I had a wedding I was preparing for... I had to look perfect!  I ordered some every workout video with a convincing infomercial.  I started doing said videos between school and work.  I was cutting back on portions and after a few months I was starting to see a difference in my weight.
One afternoon when I was short on time I decided I would go on a short walk around our apartment complex.  I wasn't breaking a sweat like in my videos so I decided to start jogging.  Surprisingly, I didn't hate it.  I broke a sweat and it was easy…. and hence a runner was born.  The entire summer break of 2004 leading up to my wedding I continued Teabo™ (my favorite infomercial VHS video find – yes, it was a VHS tape back then folks) and I also started going on runs in the evenings.  When I got married I was down to my lowest weight and was in great shape.
Honeymoon 2004
I continued to run off and on over the years.
It wasn't until after we had our first child that I ran in an actual 5K race.
In August 2009 I was asked to help promote an event for a co-worker’s relative diagnosed with cancer.  I didn't even know what to expect when I showed up on race day but I knew I wanted to help.  We ran on a golf course and I think my time was over 40 minutes.  I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the great people that I met.  I continue to participate in local races and even inspired several of my family members to run a 5K a couple summers ago.
I keep running because...  Of course, just like the reason I started, I want to maintain a healthy weight.  As I’m getting older I think more about a healthy heart so cardio is essential and running is by far my favorite exercise.  I continue because I truly enjoy it.  I like it because it’s a solo sport and I can break a sweat anywhere without any equipment.  I only have to count on myself to get it done.  As a working mother of two “me time” is limited and I squeeze it in when it's convenient.  I cherish my moments out alone with my I-tunes up just clearing my head.  I think through personal goals and improvement while I run.  I pray for my family/friends and talk to God.  I tend to have a high anxiety personality so when life gets overwhelming, I hit the pavement and after a good run I can put things back into perspective and realize how truly blessed I am.
I need to add that I am not a fast runner.  I will never be a fast runner.  My 5K PR is right at 28 minutes - pretty average.  I am not a natural athlete.  I haven’t gone near the distance as my fellow Callipygians.  They all have multiple half marathons under their belts.  I’m training for my first 10K in June with hopes of building from there.  But if I don’t go any further than a 10K, I’ll continue to run 2-3 miles a few times a week and be proud.  Another big perk is I have this wonderful group of ladies supporting me!  Yolanda shared a quote a few days ago and it really rang true, “Look in the mirror, that’s your competition.”
Now you've read how far I've come.  From the girl that couldn't understand why anyone would want to work out to the girl that strives to run more, to sweat more and LOVES IT!
How would you answer the question I run because....?

Memorial Weekend

I hope everyone enjoyed their long Memorial weekend as much as we did!  I always love this holiday as we remember our heroes and kick off summer.  I looked forward to spending time with my little family all week.
As I was walking towards granny's garage to pick up the boys on Friday afternoon, I knew we were going to have a great weekend when I saw this little head grinning ear-to-ear pop up out of nowhere to greet me! #hesthesweetest
When we got home we played outside and ate watermelon as we waited for daddy to come home.  It was terribly windy but that didn't stop our fun.

On Saturday, the little cowboys and I met up with our friends Jill, Cameron, Gavin and their little cousin Maggie for a day at the zoo.
The kids got to feed the giraffes and we had a little picnic in the park.  We went to the zoo with the Wahl's last year on Memorial Day weekend and had a great time but this year Kallahan REALLY liked it!  He is so fun to watch because he thinks he is just as big as the other kids and tries his hardest to keep up.
After the zoo and some shopping we made one final stop for ice cream.  Our boys are so ornery together but they are so much fun!  I just wish they lived closer.
We had all the kids freeze for a minute in the same place we took their pictures last year.  We were pretty impressed that all kids are looking and smiling at the same time!
What a difference a year makes!
While I was digging for this picture in my shutterfly archives I started reminiscing and looking back at old pictures.  I decided to pull a picture from Memorial Day weekends in the past and it really made me realize how quickly life changes and how truly blessed we are.
2009:: Keeler's first Memorial Day (10-months-old with cousin Samuel)
2010::  Keeler 1-year-old playing at the park
2011:  Keeler 2-years-old playing in our old backyard.  Enjoying his last few months as our only child.
2012::  Keeler 3-years-old / Kallahan 8-months-old
and it just keeps getting better...

On Sunday, Keeler and Tyler went out to work on the farm.  Kallahan and I had a lazy day and slept in until 9am.  This was amazing!  When Tyler and Keeler got back home they said they had a surprise for us... they escorted us outside and showed us they'd brought home 4 turtles.  They plan on taking care of them and training them for the fair turtle races in July.  Keeler cannot stop talking about them.  He has them named (Pocoyo, Hearts, Marshmellow and Doodles) and keeps going out to check on them.  I told Tyler someone might need a dog?!
Tyler put up our pool while were at the zoo on Saturday so we got to swim in the afternoon and then went to a family barbecue in the evening.
The little cowboys had a great time!  Wanda pulled out all her old toys so they were in heaven.  I can't get over how grown up Keeler looks in this picture.  When we got home Sunday evening Keeler said, "This was the best day ever!"  I agreed with him wholeheartedly   Then he started singing "This is the day that the Lord has made..." My heart melted :)

On Monday, instead of sleeping-in I got up and ran my long distance run (5 miles).  I'm still right on track for my 10K training but it was so windy and hot all weekend I knew I needed to squeeze it in as early as possible to beat the heat.  When I got home, Keeler and Tyler went back out to the farm for chores.  Kallahan and I cleaned the house and did a little grocery shopping.
After lunch the boys took a nice long nap then we went on a family Sonic run.
After that it was pool time!
Tyler found this Texas Hold 'Em set and had to buy it!  It's actually pretty impressive!  We stayed in the pool most the evening.  Right before dinner Tyler's cousin and his fiancé
  came over for a swim.
Kallahan didn't like the water much on Sunday but yesterday he warmed up.
Now it's back to reality.  I'm already looking forward to next weekend for more summer family fun.
